"The payment under the Sustainable Beef Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) has commenced.
This week, approximately 15,364 farmers participating in the programme will receive a payment of €46 million.
SCEP aims to achieve the emission targets of beef cattle by enhancing the use of genetics, genomics, and performance indicators.
The programme revolves around four mandatory actions that participants must take each year of the programme.
These actions involve strategies for cow and heifer replacement, genetic typing, weighing of cow/heifer pairs, and data recording.
The project spans over 5 years with a budget of €260 million.
SCEP rewards participating farmers by paying €150 per head for the first 22 cows and €120 per head for subsequent cows.
Importance of the payment
Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue commented: "This is the first year of SCEP as part of the Common Agricultural Policy, building on the achievements in recent years through the Beef Data and Genomics Programme and the Beef Environmental Efficiency Programme, by enhancing the genetic value of the Irish dairy herd."
"The launch of this programme further demonstrates the government's continued commitment to the beef industry in the coming years.
"I understand the importance of these payments to the beef industry, therefore I encourage SCEP participants to promptly submit any outstanding documents to the department or ICBF for processing of outstanding payments."
